Chairman’s Award for Kumar Dilip

Kumar Dilip, President of Sulabh International Social Service Organisation, received a UKABC Chairman’s Award at the Canvas For Care Founding & Recognition Ceremony in the House of Lords on 2 March 2026. The recognition connected the ceremony’s central theme of care with a long tradition of practical social service focused on dignity, sanitation and public health.

Sulabh International is widely associated with the sanitation and social reform work begun by its founder, Dr Bindeshwar Pathak. Its approach linked technology with social change: improving access to toilets and sanitation while challenging the discrimination historically faced by people engaged in manual scavenging.

The organisation’s work has included affordable sanitation systems, public toilet complexes, hygiene education and programmes intended to support rehabilitation, education and economic independence. The award recognised more than an organisational title.

It acknowledged the continuing responsibility of leadership after the loss of a significant founder and the importance of carrying a public-service mission into a new generation. Kumar Dilip’s role involves protecting that legacy while developing relationships capable of widening the organisation’s reach and relevance. The House of Lords setting gave the recognition an international context.

Canvas For Care brought together children’s art, community voices and public leadership around the idea that care should be visible in action. Sulabh International’s work demonstrates that principle through everyday infrastructure. Safe sanitation affects health, education, women’s safety, childhood, employment and the ability of people to participate in community life with dignity.

The ceremony was attended by public figures, artists, business leaders, community representatives and supporters of Canvas For Care. Children’s artworks formed an important part of the programme, making the award especially relevant to the initiative’s message. Care was presented not as an abstract slogan but as a responsibility expressed through service, inclusion and respect.

For UKABC, the recognition of Kumar Dilip fits within an ongoing register of people and organisations whose work contributes to positive social impact.
